Chapter Five

Dozens more bikers had arrived in the short time it took Leo to deliver the bad news to Desdemona. They guarded the front entrance, preventing any chance of escape.

I could bolt back to the room, Zane thought. I might be able to make it out the bathroom window before they caught up with me, head along the back wall and slip back into town.

His stomach felt like it was full of fluttering insect wings. With every passing second his chances of walking out of this alive grew slimmer. His mom’s favorite phrase sprang to mind – a snowball’s chance in hell.

You’re only going to get one shot, Zane told himself, shoring up his courage as they approached the front door of the office. Your best bet is to wait for a distraction. When it comes, I make a quick break and get free.

Leo stepped ahead of Desdemona, who had started out at a bossy clip and lost steam the closer she got to the main building. He put his hand on the door and pulled it open. Desdemona froze like a statue at the entrance.

“I don’t suppose you’d be willing to take a bribe,” Desdemona said, her voice faltering for the first time since Zane had met her, “look the other way while I slipped off in the chaos… for old time’s sake?”

“Sorry, love,” Leo shrugged. “This is bigger than all of us. Wheels in the cog, all of us playing our part, that kind of thing. Time to find out how you fit into the grand scheme. For your sake, I hope he finds a use for you. You won’t like the other option, believe me.”

Leo nodded to the men behind her and they shoved her in. Zane felt rough hands shove him in right after her. The first thing he noticed was how empty and quiet the room was. Normally the main building was alive with eager clients, and girls flirting with them. Then he looked over and saw that Desdemona’s office door was wide open. The hairs on his arms and the back of his neck stood on end.

He’d never seen the door left ajar even an inch, not since they’d renamed the place Hellfire’s Ashes. During business hours, there was usually a line of girls waiting to ply their Mistress with flattery and gossip, to tattle on other girls or ask for time off.

“Send them in, Leo,” a voice called out in a calm but firm tone.

It surprised Zane how young the guy sounded. He looked around, taking in his surroundings. There was no way he was getting out the front door, and even if he did, he’d make it about ten feet before the rest of the burly bikers took him down.

“Go on,” Leo said, motioning for Desdemona and Zane to obey.

Desdemona looked like a worm on a hook. She was so used to charming or killing her way out of tricky situations, that it had never occurred to her that there might be someone she couldn’t manipulate.
